Who I am

Who am I?

I am a qualified, professional editor, based in the beautiful South Downs town of Lewes in the UK but working for customers based all over the world.

I have edited and proofread about three hundred books, journal articles, PhD theses and many other types of published material (at the last count, over twenty million words), ranging in size from the smallest blog post to huge multi-author academic books.

My experience

I copy-edit and proofread all sorts of non-fiction and fiction.

I am an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. This is the highest possible level of membership and is a reflection of the quality of my training and experience. I am also serving as the CIEP chair.

I edit in both British and American English.
Most importantly, though, I care about the work I do, and want to make the same commitment to polishing your document that you made when you wrote it.

My fees
I've structured my fees so that they're be fair to both you and me. I charge by the word, not by the hour, so you'll know before I start how much you will have to pay.

I've introduced a progressive pricing scheme, so longer pieces of work will attract a lower price per word. A progressive scheme is a bit more complicated than paying a flat rate of tax, but it's much fairer. See my fees page for more details.

If you pay up front, I'll even knock 5% off the fee. How's that for fair?

My quality

I take pride in delivering a reliable, professional service. I'm not a machine or a large, impersonal company, but neither am I working from a table in my spare bedroom; I have my own office and dedicated software. That means that I can give your work the time and energy it needs to make it as good as possible.

Editing isn't just about checking mechanically for typos or ironing out inconsistencies and errors. Nor is it about sticking to outdated rules that cramp the natural style of your writing. It's about helping writing to convey meaning, to make it beautiful, to polish it so that it shines.
